Prof. Iain H Woodhouse is a leading expert in applied Earth observation, remote sensing, and environmental monitoring. He is Professor of Applied Earth Observation at the University of Edinburgh and has spent more than 27 years working across academia, government advisory groups, and the commercial Earth observation sector.

Iain began his academic journey studying Astrophysics and Physics at the University of Edinburgh before completing a fully funded MSc in Remote Sensing, Processing and Image Applications at the University of Dundee. He later completed a PhD in Atmospheric Sounding at Heriot-Watt University, specialising in the use of passive remote sensors to measure atmospheric water vapour and ozone in collaboration with NASA.

His work has focused heavily on radar remote sensing for forest mapping, understanding forest structure, and improving environmental measurement using satellite and lidar technologies. He has also pioneered new approaches to 3D forest mapping using lidar systems and drone-based technologies.

Alongside his academic career, Iain has helped build multiple Earth observation companies, including Ecometrica, Carbomap, and Earth Blox. At Earth Blox, he was part of the founding team that developed the original concept for the platform: making complex satellite data analysis accessible through visual, block-based workflows.

Iain has authored more than 100 research publications and written several academic books, including Introduction to Microwave Remote Sensing, 13 Short Chapters on Remote Sensing, and 101 Top Tips for PhD Students.

He has also played an active role in shaping Earth observation strategy in the UK, advising both the UK and Scottish Governments, contributing to the GEO Capacity Development Working Group, and serving as Chair of the Earth Observation Advisory Committee for the UK Space Agency.

His work combines scientific rigour with a strong focus on education, accessibility, and real-world environmental impact.

Perspective

Iain believes Earth observation technology should be accessible to far more people, not limited to highly technical specialists.

His work at Earth Blox focuses on simplifying complex environmental analysis so organisations, researchers, and non-technical users can explore satellite and environmental data through intuitive workflows and visual tools.

He sees the future of Earth observation becoming increasingly integrated into everyday decision-making, where satellite data, environmental intelligence, and AI-driven workflows become invisible infrastructure supporting climate, sustainability, and land management decisions worldwide.
