Sam Fleming is an Earth observation specialist with expertise in applying remote sensing, geospatial analytics, and environmental data to nature, climate, and land-use challenges.

He is Co-founder and Head of Customer Success at Earth Blox, where he works closely with organisations to develop geospatial workflows, generate environmental insights, and integrate satellite data into decision-making processes. His work focuses on ensuring customers can quickly translate complex environmental datasets into practical actions that support sustainability, risk management, and business objectives.

Sam holds an MSc in Remote Sensing from University College London and is a PRINCE2 Practitioner. His interest in Earth observation began during his geography studies at the University of Edinburgh, where he discovered the potential of satellite technology to help address climate and environmental challenges. Recognising that remote sensing combined his interests in both geography and physics, he went on to specialise in the field and build a career focused on applying environmental data to real-world problems.

Prior to co-founding Earth Blox, Sam spent seven years at geospatial consultancy Carbomap, delivering remote sensing projects for government agencies, NGOs, and commercial organisations. His experience includes forestry and ecosystem mapping, land-use classification, environmental monitoring, and integrating field, drone, and satellite data across international projects.

Earlier in his career, Sam worked in carbon accounting, helping corporates measure and manage greenhouse gas emissions for Scope 1, 2, and 3 reporting and offsetting. During this time, he developed an appreciation for how technology and automation can dramatically improve efficiency, a lesson that would later help shape the Earth Blox platform.

The idea for Earth Blox emerged from a common challenge experienced across the Earth observation sector: organisations often needed years of specialist training in both remote sensing and coding before they could effectively use satellite data. While working at Carbomap, Sam and his co-founders saw firsthand how difficult it was to scale expertise and make environmental intelligence accessible to a wider audience. Together, they developed Earth Blox to remove those barriers through intuitive, no-code workflows that enable more organisations to harness the power of Earth observation.

Throughout his career, Sam has worked on projects across Europe, Africa, North America, and Latin America, helping organisations map ecosystems, monitor land use, assess environmental risks, and better understand the relationship between human activity and the natural environment.

Today, his focus is on helping organisations unlock the value of Earth observation data, enabling faster, more informed decisions that support both commercial and environmental outcomes.

Perspective

Sam believes there is enormous untapped value in satellite and environmental data that remains inaccessible to many organisations.

Throughout his career, he has worked alongside experts in forestry, biodiversity, sustainability, agriculture, and climate science who possess deep subject-matter expertise but often lack the tools needed to fully leverage Earth observation data.

His focus is on helping organisations bridge that gap by making environmental intelligence easier to access, interpret, and apply in practical decision-making.

Sam sees the future of Earth observation becoming increasingly embedded within everyday business operations. As satellite technology advances and environmental reporting requirements grow, organisations will increasingly rely on Earth observation data to assess risk, monitor assets, evaluate projects, and support sustainability goals.

At Earth Blox, he is focused on helping customers unlock these capabilities without the traditional barriers of technical complexity, allowing them to focus on solving problems rather than processing data.

Selected experience and projects

Earth observation and environmental monitoring

Sam has led and delivered remote sensing projects covering forestry, ecosystem mapping, environmental monitoring, and land-use classification for organisations around the world.

International ecosystem mapping

Through projects in countries including Ghana, Kenya, Brazil, Colombia, Mexico, Indonesia, Canada, and Austria, Sam has helped develop methodologies that combine field observations, drone surveys, and satellite imagery to improve environmental monitoring at scale.

Cocoa mapping and deforestation monitoring in Ghana

As part of the Forests2020 programme, Sam led work supporting the mapping of cocoa plantations across Ghana for sustainable resource use and supply chains. The project combined field data collection, drone imagery, and satellite analysis to help distinguish between cocoa production systems and support efforts to reduce deforestation while protecting farmer livelihoods.

This experience reinforced the importance of making Earth observation tools accessible to organisations that have deep domain expertise but limited geospatial capacity.

Building Earth Blox

Sam played a key role in developing the original Earth Blox concept and customer experience. His work focuses on ensuring organisations can access sophisticated Earth observation capabilities without requiring specialist coding or remote sensing expertise.
